Bon Homme Richard Ship Model (Click photos to enlarge)
John Paul Jones took command of Le Duc Du Duras and renamed her Bonhomme Richard in honor of Benjamin Franklin, the American ambassador to France at the time. On September 23, 1779, Jones engaged the British frigate Serapis in the North Sea, fighting at point-blank range. During the fight two of his cannon burst, and the British captain asked Jones if he was ready to surrender. Jones famously replied, "Sir, I have not yet begun to fight." After a fierce battle the Americans captured the Serapis, after which the Bonhomme Richard sank.
